Media Terminology
Bleed- a safe zone with margins that marks out the border of a page and stops any excess ink being run over those margins when printing photos. This i will use from my double page spread which will include images and borders. This will be helpful to run off any excess ink and cut off any picture that go over a certain marker. Making my page look less cluttered and professional.
Gutter- the inside margins of the blank space between two pages. This is usually used in all magazines, whether it be music or fashion magazine, and i will use it to seperate two different articles on different pages but it will also be infulenced by the bleed technique. Cutting any excess colour that is not needed.
Alley- the space inbetween the text boxes of a page. This once again is not make my page look cluttered with images and information. I want my page to look as if every text box has a place in a specific spot and there is a reason for it to be there. Not just is as if its been put there.
Copy- the main text of a story, article of webpage,
Strapline- A strapline, in advertising, is a ‘slogan’ used to identify brands (i.e Tesco’s ‘Every little helps’). Even though I have got a headline for my magazine in mind, i have not so much thought of using a slogan for my magazine. As in my opinion the readers don't really look at the slogan, just the title of the magazine and the images on the cover. Same goes for using a tagline in my magazine.
Tagline- A tagline or slogan is a short statement intended to convey your brand in just a few words. A tagline can help new visitors to your site understand quickly what your business is about. A great tagline will also be memorable enough that visitors remember it later — giving your business lasting staying power.
  • Nike: Just do it.
  • Capital One: What's in your wallet?
  • Maxwell House: Good to the last drop.
Pug- It looks like a sticker stuck on the front of a magazine cover. Another way of forming a article trailed but looks prettier. They are usually round and around the side of the cover. I can use this on my front cover to publish recent or future concert dates of music artists in a certain area. This attracts more readers because they will want to know any reviews or pictures from recent concerts concerning that particular artist.
Pull quote- is a quotation or excerpt from an article that is typically placed in a larger or distinctive typeface on the same page, serving to entice readers into an article or to highlight a key topic. I can use this in my magazine by publishing it on my front cover to attract the reader towards a certain topic they may find interesting. Such as reviews of a music magazine or a quote from a published article about their favourite artist.
